Bernie Price has been an independent and fully qualified driving instructor for over 10 years and has over 30 years driving experience.
When selecting a driving instructor the following criteria should be followed:
1) Recommendation from a relative or friend who has used that instructor Select a driving instructor who has taught someone that you know, and who gives you a positive recommendation. You wouldn’t select a plumber/builder etc from the internet or Yellow Pages without knowing someone who had used them.
If you cannot get a recommended instructor, then use the criteria below on your selection:
2) What are pass rates for this and previous years. Can they provide evidence to back up this claim When you choose a secondary school for your child you look at their pass rate for passing exams such as GCSE and A levels. Selecting a driving instructor is no different.
Pass rates demonstrate how good the instructor is at preparing a pupil to be competent and confident to undertake a driving test. We have a yearly average 1st time pass rate of 60% and 1st & 2nd time of 82%. The national pass rate average is 21% and 45% respectively.
3) Are they fully qualified and have been approved by the Driving Standards Agency. Do they display a GREEN badge A green badge should be displayed on the windscreen. This shows that this instructor is fully qualified and approved by the DSA. All instructors we use are holders of Green badges and have many years instructing experience.
4) What is the average number of hours required for pupils to pass their test How many hours needed to pass your driving test (ideally first time) depends on each pupils ability and will vary from pupil to pupil. We teach our pupils using proven methods and adhere to the DSA Driving syllabus. The average number of hours taken to pass a test is currently 32.
5) How much practical driving time is given in lessons. Learning to drive requires PRACTICAL on-road experience. Lots of schools & instructors out there spend up to 30% of lesson time not driving. We guarantee that 100% of your lesson time is having on-road practical experience, except where new driving topics need to be introduced and explained.
We guarantee that you will pass your test (ideally first time) with as few hours as is really necessary, and for you to be a competent and confident driver.
6) Large and/or national driving school or an Independent driving school. The large and/or national schools have many instructors at their disposal and the instructor allocated to you may not be locally-based. They charge top prices for driving lessons, as their driving instructors have to recoup the cost of weekly franchise fees, fuel etc before they can earn any money .
Instructors join these franchised driving schools because the are not good enough to generate their own business and would rather pay around £200 per week to be given pupils and a car.
Independent driving schools have lower overheads, so they can charge a sensible and reasonable rate.
7) Lesson prices and discounts Price is an emotive issue and should be the least important criteria. However, most people will look at the price first. Big Mistake. Unless you follow the criteria above you may end up wasting your time and money. It is easy to trawl the internet for driving lessons and find them for less than £10 per hour. These instructors will spend more time at the side of the road and not driving (therefore not using fuel) , which is why the lessons are cheaper. There are driving schools found on the web who will offer to match and undercut our prices. Why? Because they cannot obtain their own business if they charge a sensible and realistic price or they have a very poor pupil referral rate, and therefore will offer silly prices to gain your business. They will then stretch the length of time it takes you to pass your test in order to make up the shortfall of the cheap price they offered you in the first place.
Introduce new pupils to the driving school we will reward you with either: one hours lesson time towards your practical test time or one FREE hour of motorway tuition 2 or £1 per hour reduction off lesson cost. 3
